Kingsway House

Project description

Kingsway House is a former NHS office building iand is located within walking distance of the the University of Portsmouth, the city centre and the popular student hub of Southsea. Kingsway House was purchased by Campbell Property on behalf of an institutional investor in 2013. The conversion, which was completed in 2014, having been granted planning consent at appeal, provides 52 bedrooms across 10 apartments.

The building was built in the 1970s and was originally of brick and concrete construction. The imposing façade was at odds with the largely Victorian neighbourhood, and the concrete panelling was in poor condition and in need of replacement. The original office space, together with an undercroft area, has been converted into student accommodation. The 1970s construction presented the challenge of injecting some character into the building without compromising the space available. Innovative solutions including the introduction of a large lantern light, enabled the use of a central part of the building as a living area, and the replacement of the concrete cladding with a curtain walling system gave the building a more contemporary feel.
